This policy explains how newzealand-marathon.co.nz handles personal information. The site is an information resource about running events in New Zealand. You cannot create an account, enter a race, buy anything or sign up to a newsletter here, so we collect very little information about the people who visit. What we do collect is handled in line with the Privacy Act 2020 and its information privacy principles.
Who is responsible for your information
newzealand-marathon.co.nz is represented by the website’s owner, who is responsible for the personal information described in this policy. You can reach us about any privacy matter through our contact page.
What personal information we collect
We collect information in two ways: when you write to us, and automatically when you visit the site.
Information you send us by email
If you contact us, we receive your email address, your name if you give it, and whatever you choose to put in your message. Please do not send us sensitive details, such as health information, that we do not need to answer your question.
Technical information collected automatically
When you load a page, the servers that deliver the site record standard technical details: your IP address, browser type and version, operating system, the page that referred you, the pages you request, and the date and time of the request. This information is used to run the site and keep it secure. We do not use it to build a profile of you or to work out who you are.
Cookies
We use only the cookies that are needed for the site to work properly and stay secure. They come from three sources:
- Cloudflare, which may set a short-lived security cookie to tell real visitors apart from automated traffic.
- LiteSpeed Cache, which helps pages load quickly.
- WordPress, the software the site runs on, which uses cookies for basic site functions.
We do not use Google Analytics, advertising cookies, social media trackers or any other tool that follows your behaviour across websites. Because there are no optional cookies, there is nothing for you to accept or decline. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings, although parts of the site may then work less smoothly.
Our cookie policy has more detail.
Why we collect and use your information
We collect personal information only for purposes connected with running the site.
- Answering you. We use your email address and message to reply to your question, correction or feedback.
- Correcting our content. If you report an error, we use your message to check and fix the page concerned.
- Running and protecting the site. Technical information is used to deliver pages, diagnose faults, and detect and block abuse or attacks.
- Understanding search visibility. We use Google Search Console to see how the site performs in Google Search. It shows us combined figures such as search terms and click counts, and does not identify individual visitors.
We do not sell personal information, and we do not use it for advertising or marketing.
How long we keep your information
We keep personal information only for as long as we need it for the purpose it was collected for.
- Emails are kept for as long as it takes to deal with your enquiry, and for up to three years afterwards in case of follow-up questions, unless you ask us to delete them sooner.
- Server and security logs are kept for a short period, normally no more than about 30 days, and are then deleted or anonymised.
- Cookies expire when you close your browser or after the short period set for each cookie.
Who we share your information with
We do not sell, rent or trade personal information. We use a small number of service providers to operate the site, and they handle information on our behalf:
- Hetzner hosts the site on servers in Germany, within the European Union.
- Cloudflare, based in the United States, delivers the site through its global network and protects it against attacks. Requests to the site pass through Cloudflare’s systems.
- Google, based in the United States, provides Google Search Console.
We may also disclose information where the law requires us to.
Information held outside New Zealand
Because our service providers are based overseas, information about your visit is stored and processed outside New Zealand, mainly in the European Union and the United States. These providers act on our behalf and we remain responsible for the information under the Privacy Act 2020. We choose established providers that apply recognised security and privacy safeguards.
Security
We take reasonable steps to protect personal information against loss, misuse and unauthorised access. These include encrypted connections (HTTPS), Cloudflare’s protection against attacks, regular software updates and access to the site’s administration limited to the people who need it.
No website can promise complete security. If a privacy breach happens that has caused, or is likely to cause, serious harm, we will notify the Office of the Privacy Commissioner and the people affected as soon as we practicably can.
Your rights
Under the Privacy Act 2020 you have the right to:
- Ask for access to the personal information we hold about you.
- Ask for a correction if you think that information is wrong, incomplete or misleading. If we do not agree to change it, you can ask us to attach a statement of the correction you asked for.
To make a request, use our contact page. We will respond as soon as we reasonably can and no later than 20 working days after we receive your request. You can also ask us to delete an email you have sent us, and we will do so unless we need to keep it for a lawful reason.
Complaints
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your personal information, please contact us first so that we can try to put it right.
If you are not satisfied with our response, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner, New Zealand’s privacy regulator. Making a complaint is free.
Children and young people
We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. The site’s references to betting and gambling are meant only for adults aged 18 and over.
If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has sent us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
Changes to this privacy policy
We may update this policy when the way we handle information changes or the law requires it. The current version is always published on this page, and we will draw attention to significant changes on the site.
